Wedding love poems and verse

FullSizeRender (6)In my previous life as a professional wedding guest (this isn’t actually a profession, but it should be) my face has leaked many a tear when it comes to wedding poems and readings. I think I’ve been a guest at 25+ weddings thus far and that moment when someone reads aloud a love poem or verse, well call me an old romantic but that’s when time stands still and the bride and groom just radiate.

Ok so I’m in danger of crossing the cheese threshold here myself, ironic as I have been on a quest to cut through the fromage in web wedding land. But here are some poems, readings and song lyrics that made me think. They aren’t overtly romantic, or soppy, just simple expressions of love with one funny poem thrown in for good measure. These verses for me capture the nature of love without over doing it.

Eskimo Love Song
You are my husband, you are my wife
My feet shall run because of you
My feet dance because of you
My heart shall beat because of you
My eyes see because of you
My mind thinks because of you
And I shall love, because of you.

The minute I heard my first love story I started looking for you… – By Maulana Jalalu’ddin Rumi
The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for you,
Not knowing how blind that was.
Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.
These I Can Promise
I cannot promise you a life of sunshine; I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold…
I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old.
But I can promise all my heart’s devotion;
A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow;
A love that’s ever true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow.

Close close all night – By Elizabeth Bishop
Close close all night
the lovers keep.
They turn together
in their sleep,
close as two papers
in a book
that read each other
in the dark.
Each knows all
the other knows
learnt by heart
from head to toes.

I wanna Be Yours – By John Cooper Clarke
I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
breathing in your dust
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust
If you like your coffee hot
let me be your coffee pot
You call the shots
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your raincoat
for those frequent rainy days
I wanna be your dreamboat
when you want to sail away
Let me be your teddy bear
take me with you anywhere
I don’t care
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your electric meter
I will not run out
I wanna be the electric heater
you’ll get cold without
I wanna be your setting lotion
hold your hair in deep devotion
Deep as the deep Atlantic ocean
that’s how deep is my devotion

Wild Awake – by Hilary T. Smith
People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.

And hey, what’s wrong with referencing a good old fashioned prog rock ballad?

Thank You – By Led Zeppelin
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look… see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness….I’m glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Or if you’re more a lover of folk:

First Day of My Life – By Bright Eyes
This is the first day of my life
Swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beach

Your’s is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
Don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realized that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange
You said everything changed
You felt as if you’d just woke up

And you said, “This is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But, now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So if you wanna be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We’ll just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery

Besides, maybe this time it’s different
I mean I really think you like me, me, me, me

It should be whatever speaks to you as a couple, whatever makes you smile (or cry) or whatever warms the cockles of your heart. Let me know what you think or what is your favourite love poem, reading or song? What did you have at your wedding?
